Mrs. Smercina, lovingly called "Mrs.S" and "Mama Smurf" by her students, teaches band at Durling Middle School, and marching, concert and jazz band at Clearview High School. She has been a part of the Clipper Nation for 5 years, but has taught instrumental music for 11 years total, her career spanning western Ohio (St.Marys City) and northern Michigan (Onaway Local). She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from the University of Dayton and is currently working on obtaining her Masters of Music degree from Kent State University. She is originally a saxophone player, but many of her students will tell you that she knows how to play nearly every classroom instrument, and often does while teaching at the middle school. One of her most favorite Clearview memories watching her middle school students "grow up" into young adults, and watching them learn more than just music in her band classes.

 

When not teaching, "Mama" is also Mama to a bright & precocious 3-year-old daughter, Maddie, and has been married for 11 years to her husband Mike. She loves cats, gardening, cooking, bike riding, and spending time outdoors.

 

During our time out of the classroom the students should be working from their Google Classroom account and Study Island.  I have uploaded some great articles that include NonFiction, Fiction and Poetry. The students need to complete the discussion questions, assessments and short response questions using the R.A.C.E method.  Restate, Answer, Cite, and Explain why there answer is correct.    The students will also have assignments to complete on Study Island that align with their content standards.  Please make sure to read through the lessons and complete the practice.  If anyone needs any assistance please do not hesitate to email me.  I am constantly checing my emails.  I will upload more assignments each week we are not in the classroom.  Keep checking every week for new content.
